I wasn't sure — I thought it'd feel cheesy, like those singing cards. It didn't. It felt like a proper song. My wife was holding the phone with both hands halfway through.
My dad doesn't cry. He cried.
Okay so I'm a music teacher so I was ready to be a bit snobby about this. The verse lyrics picked up the thing my mum always said to me when I was scared before piano recitals. I'd written it in the form thinking it was filler detail. It came back as the bridge. I had to pull over.
